A Proper Foundation

A proper foundation

I’m sitting here this morning drinking my coffee with a few minutes to go before we start school. Some of you know that our family home schools our children.  Our little John is in 3rd grade but has been gifted by God with a very high IQ.  At 7 he reads at high school level.  Although he could easily do most of the work of a much higher grade than we have him at we have felt it important for him not to skip grades but to do all the work for each grade level so that he does not have any lack in his educational foundation.  However, we allow him to work as fast as he wants.  He does two grade levels a year and is on track to finish both 3rd and 4th this school year.  When he finishes his scheduled work for the day he studies anything he wants to.  He can discuss how stars are formed, the chemical makeup of Saturn’s moon Titan and other detailed facts regarding our solar system.  He can discuss the different times of the earth and what happened when, etc.  He is also a Bible scholar.  People we know from businesses in town will often engage him in conversation about scientific things because of his knowledge.  John gets their attention with his scientific knowledge and usually turns the conversation to Jesus.  He is being used as a vessel for the kingdom of God.

As we are sitting here getting ready for the day ahead John is longingly going through his sister’s 8th grade materials. He does this often and I let him have a taste of the deeper educational things because it excites him and encourages him to finish where he is so that he can reach higher to the next level.

I could skip grades with him but I know at some point some foundational things would start to show up and would impede his academic growth.  By having him do the work he is not only building a very solid foundation but also learning discipline and good study habits which is a vehicle necessary to carry him down the academic road to his educational goals.

Let’s think about the things we have talked about in terms of our spiritual goals. God has called us all to be spiritually brilliant.  He wants us to shine forth as bright lights in His kingdom.  We are only limited by our own spiritual growth and determination.  Do you want to do great things in the Kingdom of God? Then just as little John has to have the proper foundation for his academic growth you have to have the proper foundation for spiritual growth.  When you try to take short cuts it never works.  It will come back one day to trip you up.

The word of God is the spiritual foundation that you must be built on.  Some people build their spiritual houses on emotion, feelings and other shaky things.   It won’t work though.  The day will come when you won’t be able to feel Him in the situation or the circumstances, what are you going to do then? How many times have you heard someone say they are no longer a Christian because their pastor or some other Christian let them down?  Their foundation was built on men rather than the word of God. If your foundation is in the word of God then you know in your heart that He will never leave or forsake you, He will never fail you.  The enemy will always try to tear down your foundation and if it is built on the wrong thing I guarantee you he will be successful.  Only the Word of God has been established as the building material that can never fail.  Think about that!  If you are going to build a house you wouldn’t use marshmallows as the foundation would you?  It’s just as foolish to try to use anything other than the Word of God as your spiritual foundation.  Some may say the Word of God is your foundation but don’t be deceived if you do not spend consistent time in the Bible then it is not your building material.  Once a foundation is built you still need the discipline of constancy in the Word of God to keep everything strong and working as it should.

The Lord will let you grow as fast as you can handle – get into the Word of God, spend time in prayer and worship and you will grow leaps and bounds.  Your foundation will be a sure foundation, solid, unshakable.  That’s the kind of people that can weather the storms of life without damage and the kind of people God can use greatly.

We Love You

Thank you for your word, when we ask for truth concerning the truth, we can be assured we will get truth, we can't listen to man, without seeing if it lines up with the word of God
